This web site is divided into three sections. Everything you came for is available on this page. If you want more advanced information and suggestions, click on the ADVANCED menu link above. If you want to understand why I created this page, click the MORE INFORMATION menu link.
WHAT TO DO:
Select passwords that aren't easy to guess, and pick a different password for every site |
WHY:
If you select passwords that are easy to guess, people will be able to use computers to guess them and be able to break into your accounts. If you choose the same password for every site, once they know how to get into your account in one place they may know how to get into your other accounts as well. |
HOW TO DO THIS:
There are many ways to pick unique passwords for each site. The most simple way to pick a password that is unique for each site is to have a base password and append the site name to it. To pick a unique base password, consider a street address you will never forget. To make it easy, we'll choose 1600 Pennsylvania. One method is to put the numbers in the letters to make something unique: P1en6nsy0lvan0ia Here I made a pattern by jumping 1 letter before putting in a number, 2 letters before putting in the next number, three letters before putting in the next number, and so on. But make this your own, depending on how many numbers and letters are in the address you choose. Once you have a good base password, then add on the name of the site at the end, and maybe capitalize each syllable. If I were using this password for Google, my unique password might be P1en6nsy0lvan0iaGooGle. It's long, its yours, its memorable, and although if someone figures out your pattern they can get into your sites, it is better than 123456 or qwerty. You can also get random passwords and a password manager using LastPass, which is available for free or for very little depending on what features you wan to use. |
